Bijou is a passion project that I created in 2018 and then redesigned in 2023. It is a quarterly magazine on film highlighting mostly independent and art house films, some trivia and history of film, and both seasoned and up-and-coming artists in the film industry.
In the early twentieth century, several small theatres called Bijou popped up in major cities in America. I came up with the name Bijou because the magazine is mostly comprised of small, lesser known actors, films, and stories.
Space is a zine that I created in 2019. Taken from a chapter in Alex White’s book, The Elements of Graphic Design, I was inspired to use the subject matter (space) to create visually dynamic pages that were easy to understand. I took words from the chapter and used them as illustrations of what they were explaining- when talking about white space, I wanted the reader to see an abundance of white space as quiet and tranquil while the lack of white space as a shout in a crowded room.
The design of this zine was challenging because I had to visually convey a subject that is essentially the absence of something; it is emptiness, or nothingness. Something that really resonated with me from the chapter is that the single most overlooked element in visual design is emptiness. Throughout the design process of this zine, and ultimately in only ten pages, I was able to ingrain in me (and hopefully in whoever reads this) just how crucial emptiness, or space, is in all design.
A mix of real clients and passion projects, these album cover designs have given me a chance to showcase my wide range of design styles. Most of my clients have been based in Nashville, Tennessee, where musicians range from singer-songwriters to lo-fi/punk rock.
Here are some book cover designs of books that already exist and books I’ve made up.
